Revenge
I hold your torn sweater in my fist,
It's the half with the burgandy fox.
I remembered it from your last tryst,
You never took it out of its gift box.
I hold your old records over a fire,
The collection you labored so to compile.
Here goes Wham!, U2 and White Friar,
You could say I'm acting so infantile
But I have no choice,
Revenge is all I have.
I have no other choice
But to soothe with this salve.
I hold your love poetry in my mind,
Remembering all the ones saying " none other ".
As I reflect back on them I find
You really meant those wishes for another.
I hold your red roses in my teeth,
The ones I received on our first.
I reread the inscription on its sheath,
Now I know who will hurt the worst.
I hold your golden books over a blaze,
The classics that you used to quote from.
Your Seuss, Carroll and Hayes,
You could say that is pretty dumb
But I have no choice,
Revenge is all I have.
I have no other choice
But to soothe with this salve.
I hold your black book in a socket,
Checking off all those names I know.
I thought I recognized that locket
That you said you'd lost in the snow.
I hold your scrapbook under the bed,
All the real memories ended in there.
The only place that I heard " love " said
Was in the same room it was declared.
I hold your unopened letters over steam,
The envelopes you secretly kept cozy.
This one's from Dignity, another's from Esteem,
You could say that I'm rather nosy
But I have no choice,
Revenge is all I have.
I have no other choice
But to soothe with this salve.
I hold your courting vows in my heart,
Those promises waxed in the game of woo.
I waited forever for those vows to start,
Wonder who it was you bestowed them to.
I hold your engagement ring on a chain,
The one you left in my champagne glass.
I poured the champagne down the drain,
But the drain wouldn't let the ring pass.
I hold your get-well cards to a spark,
The pile you sent to seem concerned.
I kept them there until they fell dark,
Maybe I shouldn't be so turned
But I have no choice,
Revenge is all I have.
I have no other choice
But to soothe with this salve.
