Downtown Blues
Fluttering off to dead-end rooms
They wind down the hours
With wine and shlong
Wet girls rise before the sun
Meet the overnight
With shrieks and prayers
God's ringing endorsement
Echoes through the hall
Ears pressed to walls
Wish turned to fruitation
In every lonely square;
Polling down emerald hills
Stone of confrontation
Heading for cities of evasion
Toppling along the way
Rivers-of-silence
And bridges-over-denial;
The town lies in shadow wood
Behind walls of apprehension
The mayor of shame readies his luggage
He is moving to another town
A place where nodding is a right
Not a privilege;
The town drunk is the only truth
All-night molls line streets of grime
At home in the murky gutter hotels
That serve perversion-- half-price
And the city dump is alongside
The police station, the town hall
Is underneath tin cans and shit
The scales of justice don't lean--
They explode! The carnage left
To be divided between vagabonds
And the rich.... The middle-'ass
Is the meat of their choosing.
