Brother, Can You Spare Some Truth ?

Never needed your pity or tears, my friend,
I sometimes exaggerate their importance;
Never needed an act of kindness, my friend,
Though I doubt your ability to pull it off;
Please don't lend a helping hand,
Please, no words meant to soothe,
When you think I'm in a dismal position
Why don't you try lending me some truth....

Never needed a shoulder to cry on, my friend,
I learned that I shouldn't get that close;
Never needed a way to forget, my friend,
The morning after leaves me with a hangover;
Please don't offer any encouragement,
Please, no cards of baskets of fruit,
If you see me in a dire condition
Try to offer me a few doses of truth....

Never needed your excuses, my friend,
Their statute of limitations has long expired;
Never needed to hear your pleas, my friends,
At this point their feeling is all contrived;
Please don't show me all your faces,
Please, no offers of self-mutilation,
When you feel an urge to call me
Lose it-- I tire of dissecting your explanations....

Never needed you to apologize, my friend,
Words this late just grains in the breeze;
Never needed to make any amends, my friend,
It would hurt only if I was surprised;
Please don't send any hand-written repentance,
Please, no stunts to regain my affection,
If we ever see one another along the way
Let us pretend there was never any connection.
