Under Here
Under here, away from the danger zone
The gunfire echoes though we’re miles down
I clutch onto a hope we aren’t alone
When we finally make it back uptown.
The dim light that flickers in your eyes
Gives me the strength to hang on
There’s a small feeling they’re telling lies
That soon, too soon, we’ll all be gone.
Betrayed by a trust given to one left unseen
They caused us to cower in fright
Now, as the bombs and the bodies careen
My only hope is to last the night….
When the sun was a given we strode tall
Majestic and bursting with life
We thought we had a firm grasp on it all
Walked bravely along the edge of the knife;
Industry boomed and prosperity bloomed
The avenues were infinitely vast
Right there and then we were probably doomed
We just had to remember the past.
History jumbles then the historians fumbled
The books never gave us the truth
They were too concerned in covering the stumbles
To worry about educating the youth.
Up on the hill they always play those games
Which peril those who have no defense
They will only think in terms of themselves
Which are the only people of consequence.
The gathering forces were building by degrees
So secret no one knew they were a piece
Soapboxers shouted but no one heard their pleas
Then, all at once, the questions ceased….
Under here, away from the danger zone
The gunfire slowly making it’s way underground
I scurry to a place that’s still my own
So do the others, and no one’s making a sound;
The rumble grows louder, the footsteps nearing
We are reunited back under the sun’s warm shawl;
The loss of peace each one of us were fearing
They cannot take that away from us, after all….
