Once You Were
Once you were a card
But not part of the deck
You were the one with instructions
That no one ever bothered to check
Once you were a number
But not part of the count
You were added to many others
And the sum was the same amount
Once you were a star
But not part of the night
You were always outshone
Because you were never too bright
Once you were a song
But never made the list
You might hear it hummed,
Then laughed at and dismissed
Once you were a friend
But now you’re just there
You were always in my thoughts
But now I really don’t care….
